Significance Of Page rank

What is Page Rank?

One of the most significant factors that have been implemented within the search engine algorithms is the emergence of the Google Page Rank. This patented technology has been designed to measure the significance given to a web page. The Google Page Rank works on a scoring system whereby the value is determined by numbers between 1 and 10. 1 meaning that it least important, where as 10 is deemed of the utmost significance. Anyone can check the Google Page Rank by installing the Google Toolbar.

During the start of the early 1990’s when the internet was evolving, there welter numerous sites that were emerging, some of these sites which had industry specific content were added to the internet database each day. Internet users the other hand had very few tools to locate such websites, which they thought were out there but did not have a clue about their domain names or web addresses. The emergence of search directories such as yahoo in 1993, gave users of the internet some comfort. This was mainly because Yahoo provided search results in an organised manner which provides users with ease of navigation online. This was achieved through the use of keywords which when typed in the directory, came up with relevant websites within its existing database. Most of these search engines relied heavily on Meta Tags to classify the relevance of websites based on the keywords they found in the tags. However this led to the usage of search engine manipulation tactics to position themselves higher in the rankings. . Over a period of time, search engine results started getting cluttered with websites that spammed their content with relevant keywords but had bad website content for the visitor. The very essence, credibility and significance of search engines was now being challenged to deal with how they could attempt to offer a more refined search output to web users.

The introduction of the Google Page Rank System attempted to tackle this very problem. Google established that in order to get users who are happy they needed to provide both quality content as well as relevant results. If the control of these two factors (quality and relevance) remained with the webmasters, the results would remain problematic with websites artificially increasing their keyword relevance.

The internet by its very nature is based on link structures referred to as hyperlinks. Hyperlinks can be defined as websites linking to prominent and significant websites. If you take the logic that you would tend to link to sites that you consider important, in essence, “you are casting a vote in favour of the sites that you link to. When hundreds or thousands of sites link to a site, it is logical to assume that such a site would be good and important” (Blakey, 1998).

Taking this logic further the Google founders, Sergey Brin and Larry Page formulated a Search Engine algorithm that shifted the ranking weight to off-page factors. This involved a mathematical formula referred to as Page Rank where the search engine algorithm would count the number of websites that link to a page and assign it an importance score on a scale of 1-10. More the number of sites that link to a page, higher its Page Rank. This has in turn led to the emergence of one of the most popular search engines which is credited both for quality as well as relevance of results, Google.
